twocities

Why I made this

I made twocities after my relationship went long distance. One of us moved cities, and after a few months every video call sounded the same. How was your day, what did you eat, okay goodnight.

We weren't short on things to talk about. What we missed was doing small, silly things together, like squeezing into a photobooth at a mall or doodling on the same napkin. This is my attempt at that, over the internet.

It's not a business

There's no company behind it and nothing to pay for. It runs on free hosting, and your phones do most of the work, which is why it can stay free. If it ever needs money to keep going, I'll say so here.

What's hard about building this alone

Getting video to work between two phones in two cities is harder than it sounds. Some mobile networks block direct connections, older iPhones can be fussy about the camera, and cutting you out of your background has to happen on your own phone so the photo never leaves it. If something breaks for you, it's probably one of these. Try another browser or switch between Wi-Fi and data, and please go easy on me.

What I'm working on next

A lot of what's here came from other couples' ideas. If there's something you two wish you could do, or something broke, write to me.
